Case studies on GIS:
Spain Parcel Mapping (Spain): This is an ongoing project and involves digitization of the parcel maps of 400 plus townships in Spain. Each town is segregated into urban and rural land classes and layers, including roads, are provided in DGN format. Of the towns already digitized, the average number of parcels amount to 2000. The objective of the project is to build a decision support system for the towns in Spain.
Environmental Agency: This project for the coastline of Southern Australia implied the AT, DTM, Contouring, Feature collection, Profiling and OrthoPhoto Mosaicing. This was intended to implement a standard, repeatable and cost effective method of monitoring of the coastal environment. It was also aimed to promote, inform and integrate the operational monitoring requirements of a regional overview, shoreline management plans, coastal strategies, flood mapping and risk analysis through the GIS data set.
PNG digitization: Parcel level mapping using existing paper maps and digital ortho photos and topo maps. Interpretation of ortho photos was required to match old maps with recently acquired aerial photographs. Lines of occupation such as fences, walls, hedges, etc. were used to identify parcel boundaries.
Olive Plantation: Aimed to produce photo maps in ECW format by AT, DTM generation, ortho-rectification, we designed a database to represent each tree as a point object. Assesed the health status of each tree and updated the data to analyze productivity for a large plantation in Australia.
Cemetery Database: The objective of the project was to build a geospatial database of the graves of an Australian State and to link the details of the deceased to query and sort based on the grave location.
Municipal Management System: MMS envisages a web based application for a municipality in India and its various departments. The application facilitates interoperability on Linux Server as an optimum web based application and to develop the needed datasets from the paper maps and data available with the User community. The web based application suite allows integrated analysis of data for planning/development and management/ administration activities and browser based update and editing facilities for the central database.
Commune of Uxeau: Digitization of a series of maps from 17th century to 2006 with about 50 years interval to study the changes in land use, river course, infrastructure and assess the effects of human intervention in major locations of interest in France for an international anthropology project.
Case studies on Photogrammetry:
Civil Works Support System (Bowen Shire Council, Australia) : This project of New South Wales included the Aero Triangulation (AT), Digital Terrain Modeling (DTM), Ortho Photo generation and Mosaicking of different target areas to compile the 3D data of the area at different scales to assist civil engineering works for the government. Our Photogrammetry team was involved in Digital Aero Triangulation, DTM/DEM generation using auto correlation and manual method, editing and ortho mosaicking. The second phase of the work was to convert the existing engineering drawings and georeference them to overlay over the ortho mosaics for efficient management of the existing system and to plan upgradation and maintenance.
Airport Development Support System (Ceduna, Australia): This project of Southern Australia intended the AT, DTM, Contouring and Ortho Photo Mosaicking. The 3D data was compiled to extract 0.5m contours for the Airport Authority. Digital Aero Triangulation, Manual DTM/DEM generation and contour generations were the main tasks.
Environmental Impact Assessment (Macqarie Marshes, Australia): An EIA was conducted to study the impact of a new industry on the marshlands. The tasks included production of orthophoto maps in ECW format to be used in GIS software.
Public Works Support System (Bourke shire Council, Australia): This project of NSW, Australia included the AT, DTM, Contouring, and 3D Feature collection, Ortho Photo Mosaicking followed by digitization of existing paper drawings of the public works department and georeferencing the data with the orthos for management, maintenance and upgradation of the public works.
Integrated Land Support System (Warwick Shire council, Australia): This project of NSW, Australia included the AT, DTM, Contouring, and feature extraction, Ortho Photo Mosaicking followed by digitization of parcel data to incorporate the existing datasets for the administrative purposes.
Nest Pattern of Migratory Birds (Narran, Australia): Narran Lakes Wetland Complex is listed under the Ramsar Convention (1977) as a site of relatively undisturbed terminal lakes system and an important breeding site for migratory birds. For this ornithology project, Ortho photos were produced by AT and external DEM to study the nest pattern of a special species of migratory birds in 6cm GSD.
Flood Mitigation Support System (Maitland, Australia): The process involved AT, orthophoto production, and editing of topographical data obtained from photogrammetric processes, structuring of contour and slope lines, data attributing, placement of height points and editing of all other topographical data in order to produce maps for flood mitigation purposes.
Plantation Management System (Australia): The project objective was to analyze the health status of a large Olive Plantation. Photo maps were produced in ECW format by AT, DTM generation and ortho-rectification. Geodatabase of trees in the plantation was created and productivity analyzed.
Change Detection (Commune of Uxeau, France): Digitization of a series of maps from 17th century to 2006 with about 50 years interval to study the changes in land use, river course, infrastructure and assess the effects of human intervention in major locations of interest in France for an international anthropology project.
Construction Assessment Support System (Cokkatto, Australia): The project demands assessment of the present status of ongoing large scale construction activities through close range photogrammetry techniques and orthorectification of the aerial imageries with 1.5 cm resolution.
Gemstone Prospecting Support System (Australia): This project was to build a support system for Opal stone prospecting. Works undertaken included AT, DTM, Contouring, ortho-rectification and Ortho Photo Mosaicking to assist exploration activities for gemstone prospecting.
GIS-based Land Resource System (Talwood, Australia): Talwood, a small town in Southern Queensland, Australia has an economy dependent on agriculture & rural industries. A GIS Data Base was required for land use. From aerial photographs of resolution 15 cm, ortho-photos & seamless mosaics were generated. Urbanization pattern, road network, drainage, & probable centers for grain storage were identified and vectorized. GIS database was developed to function as an effective resource for discretion of land use for expansion towards booming grain industry.
Digital Geospatial Management System (Gwydir, Australia): Gwydir in NSW, Australia is an economy relying on agriculture and related services. The main objective was to optimize the usage of land resources for diversification to aquaculture, olives and seed oils farming, manufacturing & tourism. AT, DTM, ortho-photos were generated from aerial imageries with resolution of 40 cms. Parcel mapping, and 2D digitization of road, settlements, drainage, land cover and land use were carried out.
Bridgewater Botanical Decision Support System (Adelaide, Australia): An assessment of trees that would sustain the ecological balance in long-term prospects was required for a town situated in the foot hills of Adelaide, Australia. Routine assessment of the health conditions of plants was performed. Aerial imageries of 8cm resolution enabled the categorization of trees as strong/weak/vacant. Ortho-photos with seamless color matching were generated. 2D digitization of the present status of trees and prospects for expansion were successfully accomplished. Point digitization was done for tree counting to assess the new set of saplings to be planted.
Land Management System (Bodella, Australia): The objective of this project was to aid the local forest industry in Bodella, a coastal village in the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. Harvesting for bot saw logs and pulpwood are carried out here. Work involved mapping of coastal forest and wetlands from aerial imageries of 15cm resolution.
Case studies on CAD:
Malaysia: A complete CAD project for as-built drawing digitization without georeferencing including Plan, Section and Elevation for major hospitals in Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia.
