GIS as an important tool in managing, planning,
evaluating and maintaining transportation systems.
To site an example, from a given data, this tool can be used to calculate the
number of residents, number of dwelling units, number of employees within
walkable distance from the bus stop, the shortest network path from business
points to the transit bus stops and the nearness of the study area from a bus
transit stops.
GIS helps to keep detailed, spatially accurate inventories of roadway assets
such as signs, signals, pavement, bridges and lighting.
