GIS as an important tool in managing, planning, evaluating and maintaining transportation systems.
To site an example, from a given data, this tool can be used to calculate the number of residents, number of dwelling units, number of employees within walkable distance from the bus stop, the shortest network path from business points to the transit bus stops and the nearness of the study area from a bus transit stops.
GIS helps to keep detailed, spatially accurate inventories of roadway assets such as signs, signals, pavement, bridges and lighting.
